Why Sreenan was selected: She helped Kaneland tie Cahokia for the IHSA Class 2A state meet team title in Charleston on May 21, winning second-place individual medals in the 100 meters (12.15) and 400 (56.32), while also contributing to the state champion 4x400 relay (3:56.15) and runner-up 4x100 (48.30).
Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week Nicole Sreenan earned four medals at the IHSA Class 2A state finals in Charleston on May 21. Here's an edited transcript of her conversation with Chronicle sports editor Kevin Druley:
Do the accomplishments take awhile to sink in, or is that just kind of a myth?
Honestly, it still hasn't really hit me yet, just because I haven't really had time. I think we were all so exhausted after, and then we had to come back and finish our finals (May 23). I think once school's over and we all get together, we'll probably be like, 'Oh, dang. Yeah, that did happen.'
How important was keeping it simple and just stressing that everyone keep focused?
All of our relays did really well, and then we had Lexie in pole vault and Allie in her 200. And I think, yeah, everybody just came together.
I know you're accustomed to it, but what do you do to keep yourself ready and energized for every event you have?
The majority of the girls on my team like to stay serious, and I think they get kind of annoyed with me, but I do not do well when I get nervous. So I kind of just, like, mess around and just kind of stay relaxed.
