The spring sports season at Hinsdale South was full of memorable moments, and with summer just underway now is the perfect time to reflect back on some of the highlights.
Hornet relays set school records
Roman Drabchuk, Michael Noble, Charlie Nodus and Brian Jordan set a new Hinsdale South record in the 4x800-meter relay prelims at the Class 3A state meet May 27. Clocking a record time of 7:48.08 was only the first highlight of the weekend at Eastern Illinois University. The same senior quartet finished fourth in the state with a finals time of 7:52.09 on May 28, an all-state finish that was bettered only by Sandburg’s nationally-ranked time of 7:37.36, Oak Park-River Forest (7:44.37) and Prospect (7:48.90).
Not to be outdone, senior Dylan Boye and junior Diamond Anderson joined Jordan and Noble on the 4x400 relay that set a new school record with a time of 3:21.54 in the prelims. The quartet placed ninth in the finals with a time of 3:24.18.
Yang the best at state badminton
Judy Yang settled for second place showings at the state tournament in 2014 and 2015.
There was no settling this time around. The junior won all seven matches in two games, including 25-23, 25-20 against Neuqua Valley’s Lauren Ho in the championship, to bring home the singles title May 14.
The all-senior doubles team of Jacque Cameli and Caroline Lee went 5-2 in the doubles bracket, including quarterfinal and semifinal wins in the backdraw, to finish sixth.
Senior Sarah Puz and junior Imani Williams went 2-2 in doubles play and senior Sara Temelkova competed in two singles matches at state. The Hornets brought home a state trophy after placing second as a team with 13 points. Neuqua won the title with 21 points.
Lipscomb medals in gymnastics
Kwame Lipscomb scored a 9.3 on floor exercise at the state meet May 14, tying for fourth place and earning an all-state medal in the process. The junior placed 14th in the all-around with a score of 49.45 and was also a state qualifier on high bar, rings and vault.
