Hinsdale Central is no stranger to athletic success, and was the case during the 2016 spring sports season. Here are just a few of the Red Devils’ highlights:
Relay sets new record
at girls state track meet
Hinsdale Central’s 4x800-meter relay team of Anne Zaher, Grace McCabe, Kayla Byrne and Reilly Revord won the Class 3A state final by 7.5 seconds May 21, but that wasn’t even close to the most impressive feat the quartet accomplished.
That mark was the fourth-fastest time in state history and set a new school record.
Zaher and Revord earned more hardware later in the state finals as Zaher placed second in the 1,600 run (4:58.74) and Revord a step behind in third place (4:59.91). Both times were season bests.
Seniors Madeline Sullivan, Monica Bhagavan and Katie Sluman and freshman Ellie Geier teamed up for fifth on the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:59.40, a finish that helped the Red Devils secure a state trophy as they placed third with 30 points.
Leahy among state's
best gymnasts
Junior Ryan Leahy earned a score of 8.65 for an all-state fourth place finish on high bar at the state meet at Hinsdale Central on May 14.
In addition to his showing on high bar, Leahy was an event finalist on parallel bar (seventh, 8.45) and floor exercise (10th, 7.7) and a state qualifier in the all-around (seventh, 51.30) and on pommel horse, rings and vault.
Tennis duo wins state title
A week after winning a sectional title, things got better for seniors Michael Czlonka and Nick Calzolano as the duo were doubles state champions. They cruised through their first six state matches in straight sets (they lost just three games in their first four matches) and then won 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (4) against Deerfield’s Chris Casati and Niko Wasilewicz in the championship match.
Zach Elliott made it to the consolation quarterfinals in singles play for a top-12 finish, and Jack Gartlan and Juozas Gurevicius were top-16 in their run to the seventh round of doubles consolation play.
Central saw its run of four consecutive state titles end, but it placed as a team.
Girls lacrosse takes third in state
A 14-8 win against Maine South on June 3 lifted Central’s girls lacrosse team to a third place finish in the Illinois High School Womens Lacrosse Association playoffs. Meghan Draddy, Shea Draddy, Gracyn Elliott, Yasmain Hamood, Melin Kelly, Anna Santulli and Maria Mulvihill were IHSWLA all-state selections after the season.
Central's team, doubles duo
top 10 in badminton
The doubles team of Angela Li and Lana Millman went 6-2 for a top-eight finish at the state tournament.
The duo was 1-1 in the main draw before winning five straight matches in the backdraw.
Honor Crandell and Cindy Tang both reached the fifth round of consolation play in singles before being knocked out.
The Red Devils scored nine points and tied for fifth place in the state.
