Woodstock Challenger Learning Center students learn about drones

WOODSTOCK – Students enrolled in the Extreme Robotics Camp at the Challenger Learning Center in Woodstock enjoyed a drone presentation Wednesday.

The 12 campers developed an understanding of how their interests might translate into a future career from Rob McClurg, owner of TurnKey Digital. Not only did McClurg explain the definition, uses and varieties of drones, but also demonstrated drone flight with his DJI Phantom.

McClurg, a drone hobbyist, has incorporated his passion into a service for his customers, primarily using drones to capture photo and video of nonprofit events. Throughout his presentation, McClurg aimed to demonstrate the positive applications of drone technology.

“It’s new, innovative technology, and it’s exploding,” McClurg said.

After discovering some lesser known applications of drones, campers felt the breeze created by the propellers of McClurg’s drone as it buzzed throughout the room. Before landing, the drone captured images of the students as they watched it fly.

“They are starting to revolutionize technology,” 12 year-old Zico Youash said.

In alignment with the center’s values and goals, McClurg’s presentation aimed to inspire young campers to pursue their interests in science, technology, engineering and math. Throughout various activities, the camps aim to encourage students to continue their education when outside of the classroom.

“Our goal is to inspire future engineers and scientists,” lead flight director Rebecca Dolmon said. “We like to ignite the spark.”
