2 people dead after fiery crash involving 3 motorcycles in Fox Lake, fire official says

Official: Motorcyclist dies at hospital; person in pickup dies on scene

FOX LAKE – Two people were killed in a crash involving three motorcycles and a pickup truck Saturday, fire officials said.

Fox Lake Fire Protection District Lt. Curt Martin said the department responded about 3:10 p.m. to 6800 State Park Road in Fox Lake.

Witnesses said the pickup truck was southbound State Park Road when it drove into the other lane, striking the northbound motorcyclists, according to a news release from the Fox Lake Police Department.

McHenry County Coroner Dr. Anne Majewski in a news release Sunday morning identified the driver of the motorcycle as 43-year-old Matthew Stautz of Rothschild, Wisc. An autopsy will be performed Tuesday at the coroner's office.

A pickup truck and a motorcycle were in a fully involved fire when crews arrived, Martin said. He said there was a group of five motorcycles, but two avoided the crash.

Witnesses pulled injured motorcyclists away from the fire, according to police, and one motorcycle driver laid his bike down on the pavement to avoid the crash.

The driver of the pickup truck was pronounced dead on the scene, Martin and police said. Stautz died after being transported to Centegra Hospital – McHenry.

Three people were taken to Centegra Hospital – McHenry, one in serious condition and two in stable condition, Martin said.

He said two others were evaluated on scene.

The names of the rest of the individuals are being withheld until police confirm their identities and notify family, police said.

State Park Road was closed for about six hours, police said.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office, Lake County Major Crash Assistant Team, Lake County Sheriff’s Department, McHenry County Sheriff’s Department and Spring Grove police also responded to the scene, police said. Spring Grove Fire Protection District, Antioch Fire Department and Lake Villa Fire Protection District also responded.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Major Crash Assistant Team, police said.
