Baker Station tutoring program gives students after-school boost

What student doesn’t need a little help every now and then? For children in kindergarten through fifth grade who are already attending one of the St. Charles Park District’s Baker Station after-school programs, individualized tutoring sessions are now available to provide that extra help young students so often appreciate to help them master reading comprehension, math, science and language art skills.

“This is a great after-school enrichment program for parents and children,” said Cheryl Riley, recreation supervisor for Baker Station and Before the Bell programming.

Hour-long sessions can be scheduled during regular Baker Station hours, with appointments available between 4 and 6 p.m. Parents should register through the park district and then arrange a consultant time with tutor Kim Klyczeck. She meets with the students at their assigned Baker Station school, which includes Bell Graham, Davis, Ferson Creek, Fox Ridge, Munhall, Richmond and Wild Rose. Children are tested to determine their individual learning level and requirements, and a tutor with teacher/education background will design a program that best meets those needs.

“This is an efficient use of time for parents whose children are already spending their after-school time at Baker Station,” said Riley. “Now a working parent doesn’t need to worry about getting their child to yet one more appointment at yet one more facility at the end of their work day. They can take care of everything their child needs through Baker Station.”

Six-week tutoring sessions running between Sept. 6 and Oct. 11 are available for $150; the Oct. 18 – Nov. 29 session costs $125.
