Kenneth D. Haverland

STERLING – Kenneth D. Haverland, 81, of Sterling, died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2016, at his home.

He was employed by Northwestern Steel and Wire Co. for 37 years, and managed the wire division shipping departments for many years before retiring in 1990. After retirement, he joined Landmark Realty as a sales agent. He served in the Army from 1957 to 1959, stationed at Fort Gordon, Georgia.

He was born Oct. 7, 1934, in Rock Falls, the son of John and Velma (Murray) Haverland. He married Ruth Belle Nutt on May 5, 1957, in Rock Falls. She died Jan. 22, 2011. He enjoyed fishing and golf. He and his wife very much enjoyed winter vacations together in warmer climates.

He is survived by one daughter, Janice Ryan of Carlinville; his son, Gary (Monica) Haverland of Sterling; his half brother, Gale (Diane) Haverland of Lanark; three grandchildren, Julie Haverland of Rockford, Greg Haverland of Dixon, and Jason McCormick of Mendota; two stepgrandchildren, Christopher and Steven Blum of Sterling; and four step-great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Nathan, Morgan, and Nina Blum.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of 53 years; one son, Daniel; a sister in infancy, Judy Ann; one brother, William of Sterling; and his stepfather, Gerald Nebergall of Tipton, Iowa.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at McDonald Funeral Home, 1002 12th Ave., Rock Falls. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Kirk Neugebauer, pastor of Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be at Coloma Township Cemetery in Rock Falls.

A memorial has been established.
