MORRIS – New Morris Police Chief John Severson named Chad Skelton as the new deputy chief Tuesday morning.
"Chad has really stepped up," said Severson, who was named chief last week. "As [former] Chief [Brent] Dite moved into his transition at [Grundy Area Vocational Center] and I took over some of his duties I gave some of my duties to Chad. It's really a decision that made itself."
Skelton, a 19-year veteran of the Morris Police Department, has moved through the ranks as patrolman, corporal and sergeant. He was previously assigned as a detective and field training officer, and most recently served as day shift patrol commander.
Skelton said he has always wanted to step into an administrative role in the department.
"One of the reasons I became a police officer is all the fields you can work your way up to," Skelton said. "Administration is something I've always aspired to do. I want to try everything."
Skelton worked for one year with the Kankakee County Sheriff's Office as a correctional officer before being hired by the Morris Police Department.
He was born and raised in Morris and hoped his career would allow him to be close to family and in an area with which he is familiar.
He said he was excited to start the new challenge.
"I hopefully can continue the good job that Chief Dite and Chief Severson have started," he said. "I also hope to be a supporting factor to not only the police but the community."
