New Plano police officer sworn in; department still looking to hire more

Jason Contreras was sworn in recently as Plano’s newest police officer.

He is now attending the Cook County Sheriff’s Police Academy at Triton College and is expected to graduate in December. Upon graduation he will be paired with field training officers for 12 weeks. When he successfully completes the field training program, he will be assigned to work alone as a patrol officer for a probationary period of 18 months.

Sgt. Norm Allison said Contreras was hired to fill one of the department’s vacancies.

“Chief Jonathan Whowell is consistently working with city officials to fill vacancies on the department. Contreras is our 17th officer, but there are still three more spots to be filled,” Allison said.

He said Whowell is hoping to get the number of full-time officers up to the 20 they are allowed as soon as possible.
