The goal of the Bureau County Health Department’s Environmental Health is to protect its citizens through education, inspection, and regulation of food establishments, water wells, and private sewage disposal systems.
The department handles all types of fees for food establishments through its food sanitation program including, license fees, renewal fees, temporary fees, reinspection and sanitizer test kits.
Its private sewage disposal section includes permits for residential and non-residential systems, septic evaluation and subdivision plat review fees, land application fees, and well programs including water well permit and inspection fees and water sampling fees.
The Environmental Health Department also covers all requirements for food handler training programs, and keeps a list of food establishment inspection scores since 2012.
The department also offers detailed instructions on safe food handling, including selection, storing, preparing, cooking, safe microwaving, serving, handling leftovers and reheating.

For those looking to work in food service the department also offers an 8-Hour Food Service Sanitation Managers Certificate Class and a Food Handler Certificate Class.
The department’s water program aims to prevent waterborne illnesses and diseases. The department issues permits to install private water wells, inspects water wells, collects water samples from new wells and issues permits and inspects abandoned water wells.
The sewage program strives to prevent the spread of disease and to prevent improper disposal of sewage by reviewing plans and issuing permits for private sewage disposal systems. The department is available for consultations prior to construction and conducts inspections of private sewage disposal systems prior to use and handles complaints, as well.
