Dorothy L. ‘Dot’ Smith

MOUNT CARROLL – Dorothy Louise "Dot" Smith, 86, of Mount Carroll, passed away Friday, Dec. 9, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Clinton, Iowa.

Dorothy was born Feb. 11, 1930, in Sterling, the daughter of Clifford and Lorraine (Hurley) Gallentine. She was a 1948 Erie High School graduate. On Oct. 1, 1948, Dorothy married Earnest Smith. They raised four children and celebrated 45 years of marriage. Earnest passed away Oct. 1, 1993.

Dorothy and Earnest farmed for many years near Mount Carroll. While Earnest also worked postal delivery, Dorothy also worked for General Electric Co. in Morrison, and later opened-up a restaurant across from the courthouse in Mount Carroll called Dot's Cafe. She was famous for her cinnamon rolls, donuts, and pies. She owned and operated Dot's Cafe from 1968 to 1980. Dorothy was an avid Chicago Cubs fan, and loved playing cards with family and friends. She was a member of Galena VFW Auxiliary, Galena American Legion Auxiliary, Galena Elks Club, and the Savanna Moose Lodge.

Dorothy is lovingly survived by her four children, Michael (Connie) Smith of Shannon, Peggy (Jim) Pugh of Chadwick, John (Peg) Smith of Mount Carroll, and Karen (Larry) Moshure of Freeport; 12 grandchildren, Corbin (Dusty Paris) Smith, Chris (Katherine) Smith, Carmen (Eric) Vetter, Angela (Brad) Alexander, Gina (Guy) Pauley, Stephanie (Mike) Parker, Amber (Josh) Needham, Eric Smith, Melissa (Erica Ferguson) Moshure, Sara (Brad) Tunak, Rhett (Becky) Roethe and Reid (Michelle) Roethe; 18 great-grandchildren; a sister, Jean Coffey of Clinton, Iowa; and two brothers, Joseph Gallentine of Vancouver, British Columbia, and Jim Gallentine of Sterling.

Dorothy also was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Francis, and both parents.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mount Carroll. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Mount Carroll.

A memorial has been established in Dorothy's name.
