High school sports roundup: Glenbard South girls clinch conference title

RIVERSIDE – Sarah Cohen scored 11 of her team-high 15 points after halftime to guide Glenbard South’s girls basketball team to a 47-41 Metro Suburban Blue conference-clinching win Jan. 31 against Riverside Brookfield.

The Raiders had a 43-12 win against Fenton on Feb. 2 to improve to 20-5 overall and 12-0 in MSB play.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Glenbard West/Wheaton North

North’s Luke Anthony surpassed 1,000 points for his career as he scored a game-high 18 points in a 51-37 win against host Glenbard West on Feb. 4.

At one point trailing by double digits, West (9-13) closed to within 38-34 in the fourth before the Falcons, who improved to 17-6 with a 61-46 win against Lake Park on Feb. 7, pulled away.

Jack Bennett added 13 points for North while Evan Taylor (11 points) and Connor Mullins (nine points) paced the Hilltoppers.

West Chicago

Tai Bibbs scored 22 points, Devonte Pascal had 12 points and Isaac Nelson added nine, but the Wildcats fell 60-55 against Glenbard East on Feb. 7.

COMPETITIVE CHEERLEADING

Wheaton North

At the state prelims Feb. 3, the Falcons scored a 71.58 and placed 23rd in the large team division.

Wheaton Warrenville South

The Tigers scored 70.83 in the state prelims Feb. 3 to finish 25th in the large team division.

GIRLS GYMNASTICS

Glenbard South

Katie Kibbey placed seventh in the all-around (32.875) for the Raiders at the Feb. 1 Glenbard West regional.

Glenbard West

The Hilltoppers had winners in every event, including the top four spots on bars, as they captured the title at their own regional Feb. 1 with a score of 145.6.

Maddie Diab won beam (9.2), with teammates Katherine Hoban (9.075), Eileen Billings (8.975) and Alison Oakes (8.95) taking the next three spots. Diab was the champ on floor (9.625), bars (9.625) and vault (9.775) to win the all-around title with a total of 38.225. Hoban placed second on vault with a score of 9.1 and was second in the all-around with a score of 36.55.

Wheaton co-op

At the Glenbard West regional Feb. 1, Wheaton co-op placed second with a score of 140.1. Macy Smykal was second on floor (9.375) and fifth on beam (8.8). Jackie Kerth was third on vault (9.1) and fourth on bars (8.925), while Maura Clark took fifth on vault (9.0). Laura Hughes placed fourth in the all-around (34.725) and Jillian Horvatin took fifth (34.425). Bridget Kennedy placed fifth on bars (8.7).

WRESTLING

St. Francis

Ben Bougadis (113 pounds) and Vincent D’Orazio (126) were champs and Stan Hilger (third at 138), Colin James (second at 145), Daniel Dickerson (second at 152) and Daniel Skold (second at 170) all moved on from the Class 2A Fenton regional Feb. 4 to the Wauconda sectional.

Wheaton Academy

Titles for Connor Scanlan (160 pounds) and Derek Johanik (220) were highlights at the Class 1A Aurora Central Catholic regional Feb. 4.
