Lemont middle school students create picture books

LEMONT – Earlier this school year, the eighth grade Advanced Language Arts students at Old Quarry Middle School in Lemont participated in creating their own ABC picture books.

Inspired by a reading from Kim Darche, District 113A’s Old Quarry’s digital learning coach, the students and their teacher set out to make books worthy of being sent to the author and McSweeney’s Publishers.

Two groups of students were specifically acknowledged by the publishers for their creativity and presentation. These included Laina Chavarria, Victoria Johnson, and Eryk Janowski, authors and illustrators of Awesome Batman Can; and Megan Bechtlofft and Anna Butler, authors and illustrators of Always Beautiful Chicago.

They received from the publishing company the “Awesome Brainy Crown” awards, and the advanced class received several beautiful books for their classroom library.
