High school sports roundup: IC, Timothy boys basketball to play for regional title

ELMHURST – A total team effort led to a big win for IC Catholic’s boys basketball team in a Class 2A regional semifinal.

Kevin Cheng (17 points), Amari Reed (14) and Matt Sutton (10) reached double figures, and 12 of the 13 Knights who saw action cracked the scoring column in an 83-61 win against Guerin on Feb. 21.

IC (20-7) faces crosstown foe Timothy Christian for the regional championship at 7 p.m. Feb. 24 at IC.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Timothy Christian

Trailing 9-8 after a quarter and 20-15 at halftime, the Trojans rallied for a 39-33 win against Westmont in a Class 2A regional semifinal at IC Catholic on Feb 21.

Joey Davidson finished with 12 points for Timothy, including a steal and jumper at the other end for a 31-27 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Next up for the Trojans (17-10) is an IC team that won 61-46 against Timothy in January.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

York

Danielle Dennis scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds, but the Dukes fell 54-30 against a powerful Geneva team in a Class 4A regional final at Hoffman Estates on Feb. 17. Kathleen Levins added seven points for York, which finished with a 15-13 record.

GIRLS BOWLING

York

During the first day of the state tournament in Rockford on Feb. 17, the Dukes posted a 5,234 score but did not advance to the second day.

Lauren Gould led the way with a 1,133 series. Jessica Cwik (1,063), Jennifer Diamond (1,057), Lauren Steck (1,015) and Krystyna Panek (966) contributed to the team score as York placed 20th.

WRESTLING

Glenbard East

Scott Szabo (138 pounds) and Brandon Raines (285) both wrestled at the Class 3A state tournament but did not make the medals podium.

Montini

Joey Melendez (113 pounds), Real Woods (126) and Will Lewan (145) were champs for the Broncos at the Class 3A state tournament Feb. 18.

Dylan Ragusin (106) made it to the finals and placed second.

Fidel Mayora won his third-place match at 132, and Matt Ortiz won his fifth-place bout at 152.

Pete Christensen (182) made it to state, but did not place.

Montini knocked off Mount Carmel 38-28 in a dual team sectional on Feb. 21 to move on to the team state finals. The Broncos will wrestle three-time defending state champion Oak Park-River Forest in a state quarterfinal at 11 a.m. Feb. 25 at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington.
