Why Farmer was selected:

Farmer dished out 22 assists and collected six digs in a 25-15, 25-12 win against York on April 4.

The second match of the season for the Hilltoppers was their West Suburban Silver conference opener, and Farmer was key to the win. He powered the offense, was one of the top defensive players, and he also served two aces as West moved to 2-0. Farmer, the Suburban Life Athlete of the Week sponsored by Lisa Cleaver, spoke with sports editor Jason Rossi about the match, West’s offensive weapons, and more. Here’s an edited transcript:

Rossi: What are your thoughts on the York match?

Farmer: I thought we did a good job. We played really well in the first set and I honestly think York did, too. They weren’t making a lot of mistakes and they forced us to play our game, which we were able to do. The second set was a little sloppy, but we ended up getting the job done, which was good.

Rossi: You were looking at the stats on the iPad between sets. What do you look for when you do that?

Farmer: I think it’s important for me as a setter to keep track of who’s playing the best. You can kind of get a feel for it on the court, but looking at the numbers is very indicative of what guys are doing. For example, in the first set I didn’t know that JT Ardell was 4 for 4 – four attempts, four kills, zero errors. So just looking at that and seeing that the middles were more effective than I thought kind of demonstrates what is most effective, and that’s important for me to know.

Rossi: What’s it like to have so many dangerous options in the front row?

Farmer: It’s really nice. When we’re in system and passing well, we’re really tough to stop. When I have weapons all across at the net at all times, it makes us really effective on offense. I can just distribute the ball to whoever I want and it’s probably going to be a kill. It’s definitely a luxury to have that as a setter.
