High school sports roundup: Offense powers York baseball during hot streak

ELMHURST – The offense has been in high gear for York’s baseball team lately. The Dukes have scored six or more runs in their last five games and are 4-1 in that span.

The lone loss was an 8-6 setback against Lockport on April 12. Mike Pasutovic singled to score Ryan Ross in the top of the seventh, but that was the end of the Dukes’ rally as they slipped to 9-2 on the season. Pasutovic went 3 for 4, Ryan Ross was 2 for 4 with an RBI, Kevin Lipkin scored twice, and Ian Steinroth drove in two runs.

The previous day, York scored four times in the top of the seventh for an 8-6 win against Glenbard West. Charlie Pakenas pitched an inning of scoreless relief in the bottom of the seventh to earn the save, and the big rally made a winner of Burke Corcoran. At the plate, Andrew Deardurff was 2 for 4 with a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored and Pasutovic drove in two runs.

In a 6-5 win against Addison Trail on April 8, Joey Chiappetta had a two-run triple and Deardurff was 2 for 4 with a run and RBI.

BASEBALL

Glenbard East

Brett Tomlinson had a game to remember against Morton on April 12. He allowed no hits and needed just 80 pitches to get through six innings. A leadoff walk in the bottom of the fourth was all that stood between Tomlinson and a perfect game in the Rams’ 10-0 win. Tomlinson finished with 11 strikeouts.

Nathan Bertuca and Brandon Quigley both drove in two runs and scored twice. William Brown had two RBIs.

IC Catholic

A groundout by Christopher West that scored Paul Morris and a single by John Hoffman that scored Austin Reed were enough to lift the Knights to a 2-1 win against Wheaton Academy on April 11.

The two runs in the bottom of the first came after the Warriors scored on an inside-the-park home run in the top of the frame.

Reed struck out seven over seven innings to earn the win as the Knights improved to 6-8 on the year.

Montini

A run in the sixth and two more in the top of the seventh helped Brother Rice get past the host Broncos 6-2 April 12 in Lombard.

Matt Pestel hit a solo home run for Montini, and Jake Karczewski also scored a run.

Timothy Christian

In a back-and-forth game, the Trojans found a way to go forth at the right time. Timothy broke an 8-8 tie in the top of the fifth inning and held on for a 10-8 win against Westmont on April 12.

Jonny Strube singled to start the inning, moved to third on Jimmy Allen’s double, and came home on a wild pitch. Josh Anderson’s double scored Allen.

The two decisive runs made a winner of Strube, who pitched 3 1/3 innings in relief of Brian Schiff. Anderson worked two innings for the save.

Allen went 3 for 3 and got on base all five times he went to the plate. Anderson was 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs, and Schiff had the big blow with a three-run double.

Willowbrook

After grabbing an 8-0 lead, the Warriors had to hold off a Leyden rally for an 8-7 West Suburban Gold victory April 11 in Villa Park.

Trevor Jaloszynski doubled to lead off Willowbrook’s five-run fourth inning. Dan Gusel was plunked after Jaloszynski’s hit, then Ryan Mintz (scoring Jaloszynski), Ben Espinoza (scoring John Taylor in place of Gusel), Jon Kelso (scoring Mintz) and Kyle Ferguson hit a string of singles to pad what was a 3-0 lead entering the inning.

Alec Michaelson pitched four innings and earned the win. Vince Ruchala got the save.

SOFTBALL

IC Catholic

Kaitlyn Falduto had two hits and two RBIs and Kayla Cervantes had two hits and scored a run, but IC lost 11-4 against St. Viator on April 12.

The Knights fared much better the previous day as they had six extra-base hits as part of a 17-hit attack in a 13-2 win against Fenton. Josie Lytton doubled and tripled, drove in two runs and scored three times. Falduto doubled twice, scored twice and drove in a run. Daniella Murillo was 2 for 5 with a triple, three runs scored and two RBIs.

Timothy Christian

The Trojans brought out the bats in a 24-14 win against Walther Christian on April 11.

Timothy scored 11 times in the top of the seventh to secure the win.

Emily Gifford was 3 for 5 with five RBIs and five runs scored. Hope Zastrow scored three times and drove in three runs. Liv Schuringa drove in two runs and scored twice, and Allison Heersink, Emily Penning and Kelly Tameling each scored three times.

York

The Dukes suffered a 12-2 loss against Conant on April 7. Julia Derkowski drove in a run, Mia Tran went 2 for 2 with a double and a run scored, and Izzy Smith also scored.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

Montini

Mitch West was a dual winner in the 100-meter dash (11.70 seconds) and 200 dash (23.08) and Max May won long jump with a mark of 19 feet, 8 inches at the St. Charles East invite April 8.

Scott West was second in high jump (5-6), and the 4x100 relay team of Zack Olson, Nick Fedanzo, John Palumbo and Mitch West placed second (44.78).

York

Jonathan Tanner (22.10 seconds in the 200-meter dash), Mateo Sanchez (53.0 in the 400 dash), Jackson Bode (2:02.40 in the 800), Cal Widener (145 feet, 2 inches in discus and 47-5 in shot put) and Obi Nnam (6-0 in high jump) were winners for the Dukes in the triangular meet they hosted April 8 against Jones and Palatine.

York also saw the 4x200 relay (1:32.60), the 4x400 relay (3:30.30) and the 4x800 relay (8:34.70) earn wins.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

Glenbard East

Brianna Raysby cleared 5 feet, 2 inches to win the high jump, and the 4x200-meter relay won in 1:51.45 at the St. Charles East invite April 7.

Kionnah Weaver was second in the 400 dash (48.25 seconds), and Brenna Peters was third in the 200 dash (28.45). The Rams placed fifth as a team.

Montini

The Broncos had five event wins at the Willowbrook invite April 8 as they scored 153 points and placed second to Hersey (155) in the team standings.

Nichole Dallas (15 feet, 10 inches in long jump) and Joslyn Boyer (33-7 in triple jump) were both field event champs.

The 4x100-meter relay (50.70 seconds) and 4x200 relay (1:58.37) were both winners, as was Maggie Connelly in the 100 hurdles (17.27).

York

Sarah May ran to third place in the 1,600-meter run (5:30.11) and Anna Morley was sixth in the 3,200 run (12:54.27) for the Dukes’ best showings at the Homewood Flossmoor invite April 8.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

York

Evan Haug had nine kills, Zach Hughart 17 digs and Rio Diaz 16 assists, but the Dukes fell 25-18, 25-19 in a nonconference match against Downers Grove South on April 12. Michael Pennel and Dylan Kalchik each had three kills, but the Dukes slipped to 9-4 on the season.

York improved to 1-1 in the West Suburban Silver with a 20-25, 28-26, 25-18 win against Lyons Township on April 11. Haug (12 kills), Pennel (11 kills) and John Goehl (10 kills) led the attack. Hughart had 22 digs and Diaz dished 28 assists.

BOYS WATER POLO

York

The Dukes capped off their run at the Lyons Township tournament with a 12-8 win against St. Ignatius on April 8.

GIRLS WATER POLO

York

The Dukes defeated Maine West 8-2 in the championship match to win the title at the Deerfield tournament April 8. Sarah Lewand was named the goalkeeper of the tournament.
