High school sports roundup: Morton baseball wins big vs. Proviso West

BERWYN – An eight-run first inning was just the start of big things for Morton’s baseball team April 15. The Mustangs scored multiple runs in every inning of a 19-1, five-inning win against Proviso West.

The Panthers committed four errors, and 11 walks helped Morton’s cause. Fernando Adame doubled in his only official at-bat. He walked twice, drove in three runs and scored four times. Nate Quinn drew three walks and scored three runs, and Alex Maldonaldo, Christian Villagomez and Isaac Madera each drove in two runs.

Adame needed only 63 pitches to get through five innings to earn the pitching win.

BASEBALL

Lyons Township

The Lions surrendered five runs in the bottom of the first, and despite battling back they fell 7-5 against Downers Grove South on April 15.

LT (9-2) rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh as Scott Garrow and Connor Pasko had RBI singles, but a double play ended the game.

Pasko drove in Wyatt Tawse with the Lions’ first run in the third, and Jack Ferraro singled home Michael Courtney and Garrow later in the inning.

Nazareth

The Roadrunners took both ends of a doubleheader against Marian Central Catholic on April 15, winning 6-1 and 7-6. Roger Veome and Dominic Milano each drove in two runs in the opener. Milano’s two-run single in the top of the fifth that scored Sam Byczek and Derek Salata was the difference in Game 2.

SOFTBALL

Morton

Ari Martinez was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and Julia Huante scored twice in a 9-8 nonconference win against Queen of Peace on April 12.

Nazareth

Devyn Zuro allowed just two hits, and Jordan Barnes drove in Lean Cavanaugh in the fifth inning of a 1-0 win against Mother McAuley on April 15. Taylor Gipson had two RBIs and Gloria Corona scored twice in a 5-1 win in the second game of the doubleheader.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

Lyons Township

Thomas Saggau was second in the triple jump (45 feet, 11 inches) and third in the long jump (21-2.75) at the Minooka invite April 15.

The 4x800 relay team of Charles Harders, Alex Lynch, Andrew Tarasuk and Daniel Palmer took second (8:16.05), and Xavier Armand placed third in the 300 hurdles (42.44).

Morton

Daequan Travis was second in the 300-meter hurdles (15.85 seconds) for the Mustangs’ best finish at the Downers Grove South invite April 15.

Nazareth

Scott Sikorski’s time of 4:48.42 was good for the win in the 1,600-meter run at the Lemont invite April 13.

Riverside Brookfield

The Bulldogs saw the 4x800-meter relay team take home a title with a time of 8:45.78 at the Homewood Flossmoor invite April 15.

Ethan Clarkson was second in the pole vault with a mark of 12 feet, 1 inch.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

Lyons Township

Sarah Barcelona won the 1,600-meter run in 5:03.42, and the 4x400 relay won in 4:05.08 to earn championships for Lyons Township at the Downers Grove North invite April 13.

Nazareth

Maeve Roach won the 400-meter dash in 1:00.24 for the Roadrunners’ best showing at the Lemont invite April 13.
