Jessica Rahn, 18, is one of Sterling High School’s May Students of the Month. Her parents are Gretchen and Paul Rahn. Her siblings are Jennifer Rahn, 22, James Rahn, 20 and John Rahn, 16.
Favorite class: AP U.S. History. I learned so much about the past and could connect it to the world around me and recognize why everything is the way it is today.
Least-favorite class: Economics was probably the least exciting of the classes I took because there were so many quizzes.
Favorite teacher: It's a tie between Taylor Jackson, AP U.S. History and Nicole Schlemmer, AP Biology. Both of these women are extremely dedicated to their work and make sure that their students truly understand the material placed in front of them, rather than just memorizing it. This was tough to narrow down because all of the teachers I have had at SHS have been simply amazing.
School activities in which you participate: Band, golf, Key Club, Movement Club, National Honor Society, Student Council and track and field.
Civic, church, volunteer or other activities in which you participate: I help with Vacation Bible School every year at Chadwick Evangelical Free Church.
Do you have a job? I work at Subway, the YMCA in the summer, and Mama Cimino's.
How would you describe your group of friends? Chill.
What will you do after high school? Attend Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and then transfer to either the University of Iowa or Iowa State to major in history. After that, I am hoping to go to law school.
What is something you learned in high school that you think you will never use? Photosynthesis and respiration of cells from AP Biology.
What kind of music are you listening to? Anything by Adele.
Is there a celebrity whom you look like/act like/feel like? I have been told I act like Rebel Wilson. Probably because we both have really random thoughts and aren't afraid to share them with those around us in a comedic way.
What's the one thing in your life you can't do without? Netflix.
What is your advice for surviving high school? There are a few really hard weeks in each semester, and if you can make it through those then the rest will breeze by.
If you could change one thing about your school, what would it be and why? We definitely need a designated nap time.
What scares you? Snakes. Do I need a reason?
What's something about you that nobody knows? I'm really good at whistling.
If you could try any job for a day, what would it be? Supreme Court Justice
If you could go anywhere in the world for free, where would it be? Washington, D.C., because there are so many historical monuments and museums that I would be able to see.
What is a good book you read recently? "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak. It is about a girl named Leisel who steals books just for the sake of reading and whose family eventually hides a Jewish man in their basement during WWII in Germany. I liked it because it was so descriptive and raw and emotional and it didn't have a happy ending.
What is your proudest moment? Raising money and helping at events for the clubs I have been involved in has really meant a lot to me because it helps so many people.
Who is your hero/role model? I have had so many great people in my life that I could list here but two people in particular who have really impacted me are my parents. My dad is a semi-truck driver and is gone most of the week to provide for our family and my mom was a stay-at-home-mom for the first 17 years of my life. Their sacrifices have been amazing. I have never doubted their love and support for a second and they are truly two of the most selfless people that I know.
What do you think your life will be like 10 years from now? It is hard to say but hopefully, I will be practicing law and driving a Jeep Wrangler.
Is there anything else you would want people to know about you? I am mixed-handed and my birthmark is on my left thumb.
Is there someone you'd like to send a shout out to? I would like to send a shout out to my parents for always pushing me to do the right things and encouraging me to be kind.
