DOWNERS GROVE – An early lead contributed to a 5-2 win for Downers Grove North’s baseball team against Willowbrook on May 6.
The Trojans scored a run in the bottom of the first and two each in the second and third innings as they won the nonconference affair at Legion Field.
North needed just five hits as four walks and a Willowbrook error aided the offense.
Sam Cogger and Nolan Young each had an RBI and a run. Sam Condon and Robert Southworth each drove in a run, and David Giuliano, Nick Bacarella and Adam Bandola all scored a run to make a winner of Jeremy DelValle, who surrendered three hits and two unearned runs.
BADMINTON
Downers Grove North
Maggie Tierney won the singles title, and Annie Bedalov and Natalie White were doubles champs as North won the title at its own sectional tournament May 4.
That trio, along with teammates Lauren Stallter (second in singles) and Anna Brady and Susannah Browning (third in doubles), qualified for the state tournament May 12 and 13 at Eastern Illinois University.
Downers Grove South
Alison McKenney and Kavisha Baxi (second in doubles), Susan Zhou (third in singles), and Taylor Fanella and Gabby Macenis (fourth in doubles) all qualified for state as the Mustangs placed second at the Downers Grove North sectional May 4.
Hinsdale Central
Cindy Tang won singles and Angela Li and Lana Millman won doubles to make state and help lead the Red Devils to the title at their own sectional May 4.
Grace Cook (fourth in singles) and Tina Guo and Helen Hu (third in doubles) also made it to state for Central.
Hinsdale South
Judy Yang was the singles champ, and Kaitlyn Hurka and Imani Williams teamed up to win doubles as they qualified for state and led the Hornets to the title at their own sectional May 4.
Claire Pomey and Priya Deshmukh were second in doubles, and Simin Rajwany was fourth in singles to also make their way to state.
BASEBALL
Downers Grove South
Michael Hall was 3 for 4 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored, Cameron Crowley brought in three, and Nick Stacey hit a triple, drove in a run and scored once in the Mustangs’ 9-6 win against Glenbard West on May 6. Michael Greco also drove in a run to make a winner of Crowley, who gave up just one hit in four innings of relief.
Westmont
Joe Donovan set the Sentinels’ single-season home run record as he hit a solo shot for his 11th of the year, but Westmont fell 7-3 against Wilmington on May 5.
Michael Kokoszka added an RBI, and Dan Fredericks and Matt O’Leary each scored a run as Westmont slipped to 15-14 on the year.
GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD
Downers Grove North
Isabel Maletich was a champion in triple jump (36 feet, 10 inches) and long jump (18-0.5), and the Trojans added two relay wins as they finished second to host Glenbard West at the West Suburban Silver meet May 6.
Faith LaMantia, Kimberly Brent, Keside Olekanma and Celeste Bonga comprised the 4x100 and 4x200-meter relays that won in 49.80 seconds and 1:43.25, respectively.
Downers Grove South
The Mustangs comfortably won the West Suburban Gold conference meet title May 5, scoring 191 points to finish well ahead of host Morton (124).
Soren Umali won both hurdles races (15.11 in the 100-meter hurdles; 48.10 in the 300), and DGS also swept the distance events thanks to Becky Versaskas (2:24.81 in the 800 run), Brenna Cohoon (5:21.43 in the 1,600) and Kennedy Warden (11:57.01 in the 3,200). Maddie Manganiello (17 feet, 2.5 inches in the long jump) also was an individual champion.
The Mustangs also won three relays. Umali, Sonja Renowden, Clarice Maes and Nicole Muccianti won the 4x100 (50.39), Kelley Hackbarth, Versaskas, Mia Burgonio and Erin Reidy won the 4x400 (4:11.64), and Cohoon, Kara Petersen, Katie Stapleton and Gillian Thomas won the 4x800 (10:09.69).
Hinsdale Central
Didi Ojiak, Lamya Augusthy, Celia Balderston and Grace Zhou teamed up to win the 4x800-meter relay (9:20.23), and Dior Nicholson won shot put (38 feet, 4 inches) at the West Suburban Silver meet May 6 as the Red Devils placed sixth.
Hinsdale South
The Hornets’ Rachel Arellano (37 feet, 5 inches in shot put) and Sarah Nwakudu (34-2.75 in triple jump) won titles at the West Suburban Gold meet May 5 as South placed third as a team.
