Scenes from Sandwich’s past: Watchtower at the railroad crossing

A watchman tower stood on the north side of the railroad tracks at the Main Street railroad crossing. On Dec. 25, 1947, the gatekeeper, Edward Schumaker, was in the tower when a derailed freight car bumped into the tower, knocking it down. Schumaker received lifelong injuries from the accident. Edward and Bessie Schumaker had five children: Lola Waechter, Marian Farr, Elmer, Frances Bagg and Evelyn French.
