JOLIET – Illinois State Police District 5 Cmdr. Capt. Darryl Bogard is proud to announce that District 5’s police K-9, “Rico,” will be receiving a protective vest for his safety while on patrol.
“Rico” is a 7-year-old Belgian Malinois. Rico was born in Holland and shipped over to the U.S. to be a police K-9.
In February 2012, Rico was purchased from Vohne Liche Kennels in Indiana, and he began his training with the Illinois State Police. Ten weeks later, he became a member of the Illinois State Police, certified in patrol and narcotics detection.
K-9 Rico and Trooper Dave DeGraff have been partners for the past five years. While off duty, Rico enjoys chasing his soccer ball and sleeping in his warm doghouse.
Rico enjoys going to work each day and is a valuable member to the department and the citizens of Illinois.
ISP District 5 K-9 Rico will receive a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from nonprofit organization Vested Interest in K9s Inc.
K-9 Roco’s vest is sponsored by the Protecting K9 Heroes Fundraiser hosted by Staci Goveia of Lynwood and will be embroidered with the sentiment “In memory of K9 Jethro, Canton, OH - EOW 1/10/2016”. Delivery is expected within eight to 10 weeks.
