ELBURN – It was already quite crowded in Mabel Cummins’ trophy case.
Then she went and added a few more pieces of hardware to the collection.
The Elburn resident and Kaneland High School sophomore won a United States Bowling Congress Youth Singles Division title as well as a doubles title (with teammate Nate Stubler from LaSalle) in April. She then outpaced a strong field of competitors at the Elite Youth Tour event at Poplar Creek Bowl in Hoffman Estates in May.
After seven challenging games at the Elite Youth Tour event, she was in first place and cruised through the championship match with a 218-174 victory May 13.
The day after winning the event in Hoffman Estates, Cummins captured her fourth consecutive Illinois State Pepsi Youth Championship by winning the U-15 girls division with a 224 average across 17 games. Her total pinfall of 3,896 was more than 200 pins clear of the runner-up and was a higher total than the 3,752 posted by the U-20 girls division winner.
In addition to her recent tournament wins, Cummins was part of a televised celebrity bowling event as part of the festivities surrounding the Super Bowl.
Her efforts promoting youth bowling to bring attention and interest to the sport led to her being named the USBC Youth Ambassador of the Year at the annual convention in Las Vegas in March.
She also won two national USBC tournament titles in 2016 before winning an EYT event in Des Plaines later in the year.
Cummins is the youngest female member on the USBC’s Junior Team USA, and she will join the team for a tournament in Texas in late June before competing at the Teen Masters Championships in Richmond, Va., in early July and the 2017 National Junior Gold Championships in Cleveland in late July.
