DeKalb police add UTV to fleet

Officials, leaders and businessmen show off the newest addition to the DeKalb Police Department force: a utility task vehicle.

Shown are DeKalb Police Cmdr. Steve Lekkas; Phil Young, president of the DeKalb Park District Board; Amy Doll, executive director of the DeKalb Park District; Colby Reichling, a representative with Sycamore-based R Equipment; officer Jared Burke; and Noah Nordbrock, donor services and marketing director for the DeKalb County Community Foundation.

With the foundation chipping in $8,000, the park district adding $5,000, and money being used from the city's Asset Forfeiture fund, no taxpayer dollars were used in the $18,400 purchase.

Lekkas said the vehicle will help officers patrol tough-to-reach parts of town through normal patrol methods. Among its numerous special assignments? Special events such as the Fourth of July, Cornfest and National Night Out.
