SPRINGFIELD – Soldiers from Dixon-based Troop B, 2nd Squadron, 106th Cavalry Regiment, were recognized Aug. 10 by Gov. Bruce Rauner at the State Fair.
The six soldiers were members of the troop’s 2017 Gainey Cup Best Scout Squad Competition team.
The team was made up of 1st Lt. Bobby Springer of Chicago, Staff Sgt. Zechariah Johnson of Oregon, Sgt. Evan Westart of Oswego, Sgt. Mathew Runyon of Broadwell, Sgt. Daniel Delinski of Washington, Illinois, and Pvt. 1st Class Michael Cates of Villa Park.
They placed third overall and first among all National Guard teams in the competition in May at Fort Benning, Georgia.
The competition, held once every 2 years, featured top cavalry teams from throughout the Army, as well as teams from various allied nations.
After meeting with the governor, the team participated in the annual Twilight parade.
