CHIANG MAI, Thailand – Stephen Daniel “Dan” Banes, 71, formerly of Sterling, died of an aneurysm Sunday, Oct. 22, 2017.
Dan was born Jan. 25, 1946, to Maxine and Harold Banes. He graduated in 1964 from Sterling High School. He was a proud member of the Air Force from September 1965 to September 1968, where he was a Sgt. E-4 mechanic in Thailand.
He was a retired Millwright Local Union 2158. He also was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Sterling.
Survivors include his wife, Natcha (Wi) Banes of Thailand; one daughter, Sadie (Ty Evans) McLaughlin of Bettendorf, Iowa; one granddaughter, Kendall; two sisters, Mary Jo Adler (Foy) of Sterling and Beverly (Bill) Boesen of Sterling; two brothers, Dave (Sandy) Banes of Rock Falls and Doug (Jan) Banes of Mount Carroll; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and brothers-in-law, Larry Foy and Thomas Adler.
Military honors services will be at 4 p.m. Nov. 29 at Sterling American Legion, with a celebration of life to follow at the Legion. Schilling Funeral Home and Cremation in Sterling is handling local arrangements.
A memorial has been established.
