Coffeehouse celebrates ‘Stranger Things’

GENEVA – Stranger things may have happened before, but never at Graham's 318 Coffeehouse, when it hosted a "Stranger Things" event Oct. 27 to mark Netflix's launch of the show's second season.

“Our ‘Stranger Things’ event … drew lots of excited fans to our shop all day,” coffeehouse manager and event organizer Kristen Sommerfeld stated in a news release.

The all-day event also raised $240 for TriCity Family Services through raffle ticket sales for a copy of the pilot script, which Netflix sent to the coffeehouse for the event, the release stated.

Mayor Kevin Burns assisted by handing out T-shirts to fans who were waiting in line, the release stated.

Burns also participated in the green screen photo booth, where guests could choose a scene from the show to be featured as a backdrop, the release stated.

The coffeehouse was transformed to look like various scenes from the TV show, the release stated. There is a famous scene where a son communicates to his mother by flashing lights to spell out responses to her questions while he is trapped in the “Upside Down,” a spooky other world, the release stated.

Many references to 1980s pop culture are also in the show, the release stated.

Sommerfeld created a specialty drink, Eleven’s Leggo My Eggo, which is a blended vanilla latte with maple syrup and cinnamon flavoring, the release stated.

The drink was garnished with homemade whipped cream, cinnamon sugar and a mini Eggo waffle with maple syrup drizzled on top, the release stated.

Eleven is one of the main characters on the show and loves to eat Eggo waffles, the release stated.

Pastry chefs at the coffeehouse made vanilla cupcakes with maple buttercream frosting and a mini Eggo waffle on top, the release stated. The coffeehouse also offered homemade maple cream-flavored gelato, the release stated.
