DeKALB – Construction on the new Casey’s General Store on the northwest corner of Route 38 and Peace Road is on schedule to be completed by the end of November, DeKalb Principal Planner Dan Olson said.
The site was the former location of DeKalb Florist and Greenhouse, 2131 E. Lincoln Highway, which had been run by Jim and Doris Kaelin for 51 years and had served as a greenhouse in the community for 112 years. The 4,300-square-foot Casey's building will feature 16 fuel pumps.
Rezoning for the project was approved in January. According to city documents, the developer, Pearl Street Commercial LLC, agreed to donate $5,000 to the city for a future city of DeKalb monument entrance sign at the intersection and the establishment of a sign easement. It also pledged $10,000 for future decorative street lighting within the East Lincoln Highway right of way.
Work initially was anticipated to begin in the spring, and completion of the project was expected during this past summer.
Demolition for the project wrapped up in July and included the removal of a commercial building, residence and several greenhouses.
