Police: Mokena man waves katana sword at wife, parents

MOKENA – A Mokena man allegedly waved around a katana at family members in a fit of anger, police said.

Jason R. Lofrano, 40, of the 19000 block of Tramore Lane was arrested by Mokena police Oct. 16 on a charge of aggravated assault and use of a deadly weapon.

Mokena Police Chief Steven Vaccaro said Lofrano allegedly got into a domestic dispute with his wife.

During the dispute, Lofrano allegedly armed himself with a sword and waved it around toward his wife and his parents, Vaccaro said. Vaccaro also said officers indicated in their reports that it was a katana.

Lofrano reportedly is a sword collector. A katana is a Japanese samurai sword.

Police arrived and after interviewing everyone, arrested Lofrano.

Lofrano he was taken to a local hospital for a psychological evaluation, police said.

Vaccaro said no one was injured in the incident.

A warrant was later issued for Lofrano’s arrest on Oct. 20. Lofrano surrendered to police, and he was booked into the Will County jail on Nov. 8.

The warrant for Lofrano’s arrest carried $10,000 bond. He remained in custody Wednesday evening.
