Stanley Phillips

JOHNSTOWN, Colo. — Stanley Edward Phillips of Johnstown, Color., formerly of Princeton, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 3, 2017.

Stanley “Stan” was born Feb. 6, 1936, in rural Sheffield, the son of William S. and Orpha M. (Johnson) Phillips. After briefly attending Sheffield Grade School, his family moved to a farmstead north of Wyanet where he was raised. He graduated from Wyanet High School in 1954.

He married Charlotte Szymanski on Sept. 15 1957, at St. George Romanian Orthodox Church in Lansing. She survives him in Johnstown, Colo.

An entrepreneur by nature, he owned several businesses during his lifetime. He owned and operated Dunkin Donuts in Chicago and House of Donuts in Hammond, Indi. After several years in Indiana, he then moved his family to Princeton, where he worked for Hyster Inc. in Kewanee and Farm Bureau Services in Princeton.

In 1976, he began his automobile career working for Dale Husser, Auto Sales in Princeton as a salesman. In 1978, he and his brother, Kenny, opened Phil Motors in Princeton. In 1983, he owned and operated Harmony Auto Sales in Fort Collins, Colo. In 1989, he owned and operated Subway Sandwich Shop in Anacortes, Wash., then moved to Bowling Green, Ky., in 1993, where they owned and operated several Subway sandwich shops until his retirement in 2004. After his retirement, he and his wife moved back to Colorado, where he resided the remainder of his life.

Stan loved life and his family. He was a Bronco fan and loved football Sundays with his family. He looked forward to birthdays, holidays and special events when his family was around. He was known for his “happy go lucky” attitude, and always seeing the positive in everything.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his older brother, Laverne, and his older brother, Kenny, who was born on the same day a year earlier and died the same day two hours later. He is survived by his sister, Barbara Rich of Wyanet, and several nieces and nephews.

Also surviving are his three children, Karen (Mike) Kelly of Bowling Green, Ky., Laurie (Robert Teegardin) Hayes of Johnstown, Colo., and Jeff Phillips of Johnstown, Colo.; eight grandchildren, Christopher (Christina) Kelly, Danielle Hayes, Taylor Porter, Brittany (Robert) Gould, Cydney Hayes, Tyler (Gabby) Phillips, Jake (Desteney) Phillips and Corey Phillips; and five great-grandchildren, Jacob and Avery Kelly, Siera and Dominic Phillips, and Carson Phillips.

A small service was held for family and close friends on Monday, Nov. 6, at Grace Community Church in Johnstown, Colo. Cremation rites were accorded.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in his memory.
