Leo A. McGinnis

DIXON – Leo Arthur McGinnis, 86, of Dixon, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2017, at Keota Health Care Center in Keota, Iowa.

Leo was born July 3, 1931, in Dixon. He was the only child of Joseph Patrick and Alice Lucille (Hoban) McGinnis. He spent all of his childhood in Dixon, attending St. Mary School, then graduating with the class of 1950 from Polo High School.

He enlisted in the Navy, where he served on the USS Macon and USS Fulton from 1951 to 1955. He was married to Lydia Jane Baker on Aug. 14, 1954. They made their home in Oregon, and later moved to Dixon, where they lived for 42 years. He was employed at Kable Printing Co. in Mount Morris for many years, and then the Illinois Tollway until his retirement. He also served as commissioner for the city of Dixon. In recent years he had lived in Washington, Iowa.

He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Dixon. He was active in many organizations, including Dixon Knights of Columbus, past commander of Oregon VFW Post 8739, Dixon Noon Lions, and The American Legion.

Survivors include his daughters, Monica Maronich of Spring Green, Wisconsin, and Mary Beth (Tom) Adam of Harper, Iowa. There are six grandchildren, Alison, Andrew, Eric, Ryan, Emily, and Megan. Also surviving are a brother-in-law, Michael (Jeanne) Baker of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Lydia, in 2013.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday with a scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Jones Funeral Home in Dixon. Prayer service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, followed by a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Dixon, with the Rev. Keith Romke officiating. Burial, with military honors by the Dixon Combined Veterans Group, will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Dixon.

A memorial has been established to St. Mary School in Dixon.
