Glen Ellyn assistant police chief to become assistant village manager

GLEN ELLYN – After moving into the new Glen Ellyn police station last summer with his fellow employees, Glen Ellyn Assistant Police Chief Bill Holmer will be moving back to the Glen Ellyn Civic Center as he accepts the position of assistant village manager.

Holmer, 48, is a 26-year veteran of the Police Department, and he has served as assistant chief of police since 2002. The assistant village manager post has been vacant since July 2017, when Al Stonitsch became the new village administrator of Woodridge.

The Police Department moved into its new building at 65 S. Park Blvd. in June 2017 after being in the Civic Center for more than 40 years. The village's offices are housed in the center.

Holmer said he is looking forward to the opportunity to continue serving the village. He will officially start in the position Jan. 15.

"It was a good time for some change," Holmer said. "I've very much enjoyed my career in the village. I think it's a great place. It's very much of a service-oriented Police Department. We really have always tried to practice with a philosophy of treating people with respect in all that we do. I think that [philosophy] lends itself to the rest of the village as well. The village is very big on customer service and volunteerism. I appreciate that approach, and I believe in it."

Since November, Holmer has been acting in a dual role and performing some duties of the assistant village manager along with continuing in his role as assistant police chief.

As assistant village manager, Holmer's duties will include managing the village's human resources, information technology and facilities departments, as well as overseeing the communications department and assisting with managing all other village departments.

"Bill’s knowledge and involvement with the Glen Ellyn community, coupled with his management and problem-solving skill sets, made him an excellent fit for this position,” Glen Ellyn Village Manager Mark Franz said in a statement. “We are looking forward to working with Bill in this new capacity and rounding out a strong management team with his expertise.”
