2 officers promoted to Downers Grove Police Department's leadership team

DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove Police Chief Shanon Gillette has named two officers to the Police Department's leadership team.

Gillette on Feb. 5 promoted Mike DeVries to deputy chief of operations and Jim McGreal to deputy chief of support services, according to a village news release.

DeVries has been a Downers Grove police officer for 18 years and has served in a variety of leadership roles including lieutenant of investigations, lieutenant of operations, detective sergeant and patrol sergeant.

In 2012, he earned a master's degree in public safety administration from Lewis University. He also holds a master's degree in management and organizational behavior from Benedictine University, the release stated.

DeVries also is a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command and the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va., according to the release.

“Mike's exceptional leadership skills and operational experience will enable him to have a positive impact as deputy chief," Gillette said in the release.

McGreal has been a Downers Grove police officer for 15 years and has been involved with numerous special assignments related to drug enforcement, the release stated.

He served as task force officer with the Drug Enforcement Administration's Chicago Strike Force and as special agent to the Illinois State Police DuPage Metropolitan Enforcement Group, according to the release.

McGreal earned a master's degree in public safety administration from Lewis University.

He also has earned numerous awards including the Downers Grove Police Department Richard Barth Officer of the Year Award and 11 Illinois Metropolitan Enforcement Group Director's awards.

McGreal has achieved certification through the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police Voluntary Chief Certification Program, signifying he met the highest standards of leadership and professionalism in the Illinois law enforcement community, the release stated.

“Jim is a recognized leader in our department because of his commitment to team work and mentoring future leaders,” Gillette said in the release.

Both promotions were effective Feb. 11.
