Silver Cross Hospital employees awarded scholarships

NEW LENOX – The Silver Cross Foundation awarded $28,566 in scholarships to 14 Silver Cross employees and three of their children to help further their education.

Paul Pawlak Scholarship

The Advisory Board, Childerguild and Will County Union of King’s Daughters and Sons, along with the Silver Cross medical staff honored Paul Pawlak in 2017 for his 27 years of service as president and CEO by creating the Paul Pawlak Scholarship to fund the continuing education of Silver Cross Hospital’s employees.

Scholarships were awarded to Shorewood resident Sherry Marvo, case manager in quality resource management, pursuing a degree at Rasmussen College; Coal City resident Lois Stone, registered nurse in the EKG department, pursuing a master’s degree at Eastern New Mexico University; Elwood resident Erin Weiss, clinical educator in nursing administration, pursuing a master’s degree at University of St. Francis; and Cheryl Williams, nurse manger on 6:2 patient care unit, who is pursuing a master’s degree at Aurora University.

Each received a $2,500 scholarship.

Frances M. Thomas Nursing
Scholarships

The scholarship is named for former Silver Cross Emergency Department Registered Nurse Frances Thomas.

Scholarships were awarded to New Lenox resident Heather Haley, anesthesia technician in the procedural care unit; Frankfort resident Amy Norwich, radiation therapist at the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center at Silver Cross; and Ciera Voorhees, diagnostic imaging transporter, who are all pursuing registered nursing degrees at Joliet Junior College. Joliet resident Kelley Winkfield, certified nursing assistant on 6:2 patient care unit also received the Frances M. Thomas Nursing Scholarship. Winkfield is pursuing her degree at Chamberlain University.

Scholarships ranged from $500 to $1,000 per employee.

Donna and Jim Galligan Scholarship

This scholarship is funded by Donna and Jim Galligan, longtime Joliet residents and devoted supporters of Silver Cross Hospital.

Scholarships were awarded to Joliet resident Kelly Hoffmann, emergency room technician in the Homer Glen Emergency Department, who is pursuing a degree at Lewis University; and Oswego resident Candace Wroblewski, case management manager in continuum of care, who is pursuing a master’s degree at Capella University.

They each received a $1,000 scholarship.

Twilla S. Margaron Nursing
Scholarship

This scholarship is named after Twilla S. Margaron, who was a 1950 graduate of the Silver Cross School of Nursing and an active member of the Silver Cross Encore Resale Shop. This scholarship is awarded annually to a Silver Cross employee who is pursuing a nursing degree.

Joliet resident Sylvia Barbour, a registered nurse on 6:3 patient care unit, is the recipient of a $1,000 Twilla S. Margaron Nursing Scholarship. Barbour is pursuing a degree at Purdue Northwestern University.

Dr. Irving Rudman Scholarship

This scholarship, named after former Silver Cross physician Dr. Irving Rudman, is awarded annually to a Silver Cross employee who is pursuing studies in health care.

Crest Hill resident Kathy Valestin-Witt, registered nurse in the EKG/stress lab, is the recipient of a $2,000 Irving Rudman Scholarship. She is pursuing a degree at Aspen University.

Physicians Legacy Scholarship

The Physicians Legacy Scholarship, which is sponsored by the Silver Cross Medical Staff, acknowledge physicians’ legacy of service and commitment to Silver Cross Hospital and is given annually to Silver Cross employees pursuing a health care degree.

Mokena resident Nicole Fender, radiation oncology charge nurse at the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center at Silver Cross, who is attending The University of Illinois Chicago; and Lockport resident Jayme Sala, registered nurse in the hospital’s birthing center, who is attending Lewis University, each received a $2,000 Physician’s Legacy Scholarship.

Physicians Legacy Scholarship – Children of Employees

Shorewood resident Megan Meyer, Orland Park resident Elizabeth Nelson and Kankakee resident Rebecca Staniszeski are each the recipient of a $2,000 Physician’s Legacy Scholarship for children of Silver Cross employees.

Megan is the daughter of Kathleen Meyer a registered nurse at the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center at Silver Cross. Megan currently is pursuing a nursing degree at St. Louis University.

Elizabeth is the daughter of Lynda Nelson, a registered nurse, in the birthing center. Elizabeth is pursuing a nursing degree at Bradley University.

Rebecca is the daughter of Brian Staniszeski, a computer operations manager in the Information technology department. Rebecca is pursuing a degree in exercise science/physical therapy at Indiana State University.
