Video post leads to arrest of Sandwich High School student on firearms charge

SANDWICH – A Sandwich High School student has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm after an investigation into a video posted on social media.

According to Sandwich High School Principal Tom Sodaro, administrators contacted police Monday after learning that Sandwich students had shared the video.

Police Chief James Bianchi said the video showed a student threaten another person with a gun and attempt to instigate a fight by using a racial slur. The boy's name is not being released because he is underage, officials said.

Sodaro said no other Sandwich students were named or threatened in the video.

According to Bianchi, the student was removed from class Monday and taken into police custody after a search of his possessions.

Both Bianchi and Sodaro said that there is no threat or danger to Sandwich High School students or staff, and that no guns had been present on school grounds.

“As always, had there been a real threat to our students, you would have been notified once we had determined the students, staff and building to be safe and education had resumed," Sodaro said in a message to parents and staff.
