Candidates' Voices – Linda Beck: ‘Advocating for fiscal responsibility, accountability’

Ogle treasurer candidate knows county’s finances as chief deputy

Sauk Valley Media presents a series of guest columns by candidates in key contested races in the March 20 primary election. Candidates were invited to write up to 500 words about why voters should support them. Today's race: Ogle County treasurer.

I am seeking the Republican nomination for Ogle County treasurer in the upcoming primary election.

My experience as chief deputy treasurer, my personal connection as a citizen of Ogle County, and my passion for efficiency, accuracy and accountability position me well for the role.

Having served as chief deputy treasurer for the past 12 years, I have a broad knowledge of all aspects of the office. The treasurer’s office is responsible for the real estate tax billing, collection and distribution to the taxing bodies.

Other functions include revenue collection from all departments, accounts payable for the various funds, payroll processing for 250 county employees, investing available monies, and supporting the County Board in preparing the annual budget.

A few of my accomplishments over the years include:

• Working with the auditors to administer changes that consistently enhance the transparency of our accounting practices.

• Automating the revenue collection process to improve efficiency and the recording of incoming revenue across multiple county departments.

• Implementing the 1095C reporting required by the Affordable Care Act.

• Leading the project to activate a human resource portal that gives all county employees access to their personal information, which, in turn, streamlines the process of making updates.

Prior to joining the county treasurer’s office, I worked in the accounting field for over 20 years, and held several management-level positions.

The Ogle County Treasurer’s Office consists of the treasurer, one full-time chief deputy (me) and two part-time staff, plus a seasonal resource to assist with property taxes. This staffing level is quite lean compared to other offices and counties.

It is enough for two reasons: one, investments in automation and process improvements such as those highlighted above; and two, the treasurer works all day, every day.

This is not a figurehead position. I have consistently demonstrated the capability and dedication to fulfill that role.

Ogle County is dealing with serious budgetary issues. I have firsthand knowledge of them, having lived with them every day. I see the declining balance in the General Fund year-over-year and work closely with the treasurer to manage our cash flow in order to cover our obligations.

As treasurer, I will do more than just furnish the County Board with timely and accurate financial information. I will also offer insightful analysis and alternatives to aid in their decision processes.

I have faced personal financial and marital challenges, but through hard work and determination, I found in myself the ability to overcome any obstacles and the strength to fight for a better life for my family. My pledge is to apply these same principles, along with my strong work ethic and experience, in my role as county treasurer.

My vision is to continue to improve the efficiency of the office and provide exceptional customer service, while advocating for fiscal responsibility and accountability in county government.

I would appreciate your vote on March 20.
