In the early rounds of the 2018 Valley View Middle School spelling bee, it looked like it was going to be a quick night. By the fourth round, there were only a handful of the 15 competitors still alive and then the field was cut in half with only Danielle Vidad of Jane Addams Middle School and Camille Ogunleye of Brooks Middle School still perfect.
Then it began to look like it might be a very long evening instead.
The two eighth-graders went letter-for-letter for a total of 19 rounds before Danielle emerged victorious, thanks to her correct spelling of the word “fandango.” The final Top 3 spot was claimed by seventh-grader Maryam Sohail of A. Vito Martinez Middle School.
Joining the Top 3 at the Will County Spelling Bee as the top spellers in their schools are eighth-graders Nick Agyemang of Lukancic Middle School and Cali Swinarski of Humphrey Middle School. Nick is making his second trip in a row to the Will County Bee.
The Will County Spelling Bee took place March 7 at Lockport High School’s East Campus.
