A 22-year-old Woodstock man showed remorse Tuesday as he told a judge how he had fallen into the wrong crowd the night he allegedly threatened to kill two Woodstock detectives.
At a sentencing hearing Tuesday morning, Treyveon Ashley read a prepared statement to McHenry County Judge Sharon Prather, and promised to never re-offend or let down his family.
“Please give me a second chance,” Ashley said
Ashley was sentenced to two years of probation on charges that stemmed from events Oct. 20. According to complaints filed in McHenry County court, Ashley possessed two stolen shotguns. He also was accused of using a stolen credit card to rent a “Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Play Station 4 video game from a Redbox machine and threatening to kill a pair of Woodstock detectives.
The guns, two 12-gauge Remington shotguns, were believed to have been stolen from a U.S. Marshal’s vehicle, according to the complaint.
Prather ordered Ashley to pay $500 and serve 180 days in the county jail, for which he will receive credit for time he has already served.
“I strongly suggest you change your associates in the future,” Prather said.
The case was tied to charges against another man, 19-year-old Maurice Timberlake, who Woodstock authorities arrested on multiple charges after he allegedly fired several rounds of a gun, hitting at least one house. Investigators believed Ashley and Timberlake worked together because Timberlake used a shotgun and pistol associated with the firearms theft Oct. 20, Woodstock Police Chief John Lieb said at the time. Timberlake is due back in court June 16.
Ashley entered blind guilty pleas in April to threatening a public official, identity theft and aggravated possession of stolen firearms.
Prather said she sentenced the man to probation since he had little to no criminal history.
