Brooks Elementary principal to tender resignation

DeKALB – Brooke Condon will resign as principal of Gwendolyn Brooks Elementary School effective June 18, pending the DeKalb School District 428 Board’s approval during its Tuesday meeting.

Condon had been receiving an $84,249.65 salary.

Her resignation will be a part of a series of personnel items contained within the nonbusiness consent agenda.

During the 2017-18 school year, several parents and substitute teachers raised concerns about student safety at Brooks.

In January, DeKalb parent Monica Jefferson posted several pictures of her daughter, who had been injured during a school sledding trip, on Facebook. The pictures showed several abrasions on her daughter’s face.

Jefferson claimed she had not been contacted by the school or the principal about what happened.

Another parent, Jenn Soss, said her second-grade daughter also was hurt on the trip and that Condon, the school nurse and the child’s teacher contacted her about her daughter’s condition.

Suzie Anderson, who has been a substitute teacher after her retirement five years ago, said she has had to break up a fight between students both this year and last year. She said she was not asked to file an incident report in either situation. She said she also has observed chairs and desks getting thrown and one student stomping on another.

“What I see going on is absolutely outrageous,” Anderson said.

The district board also will approve new contracts for Huntley Middle School Principal Amonaquenette Parker and District 428 curriculum and instruction director Jennie Hueber, according to the agenda.

Parker’s new 260-day contract will carry a $119,415 salary, while Hueber’s will have a $108,920.20 salary.

The district board meeting will be at 7 p.m. in the District 428 Education Center, 901 S. Fourth St.
