CHICAGO – Dennis G. Smoot, 69, formerly of Sterling, passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2018, in Chicago.
Dennis was born Jan. 3, 1949, in Sterling, the son of Betty M. and Charles G. Smoot. He attended St. Mary Grade School and graduated in 1967 from Newman Central Catholic High School. He attended the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana from 1967 to 1971. He attended Southern Illinois University, where in 1984 he received a bachelor of science degree in mathematics. In 1992, he received a master of science degree in mathematics-statistics from Roosevelt University in Chicago. He then attended the University of Illinois – Chicago, where in 2011 he earned his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degree in physics-mathematics.
Dennis was a teaching assistant at University of Illinois – Chicago from 1993 to 2003. He had been a tutor at the Center for Teaching and Learning at Aurora University from 2011 and an Adjunct Professor at the City Colleges of Chicago and Harry S. Truman College from 2014.
Dennis is survived by his brother, David L. (Linda) Smoot of Geneva; and his nieces, Taryn R. Smoot and her son, David J. Kennerly of Tempe, Arizona, and Vanessa L. Smoot of Geneva.
Dennis was preceded in death by his mother in 1983; his father in 2009; his brother, Terrence in 1975; and his brother, Lawrence in 2014.
A private ceremony is planned for mid-July at Calvary Cemetery in Sterling. Yurs Funeral Home in St. Charles is handling the arrangements.
