Visitors can catch a ride Saturday on the Volo Auto Museum’s rare double-decker Disney bus.
This one-day-only event is in celebration of the omnibus's Disneyland debut 62 years ago this month. It's a happening that briefly was called into question after a pair of children took the vehicle out of park, sending it rolling downhill into a tree, while it was undergoing maintenance in a restricted area last month.
No one was injured in the crash, but the bus was damaged. It is ready to roll again this weekend, however, along a clearer and surer path, and with a licensed driver behind the wheel.
The Disney omnibus debuted at Disneyland in 1956 in Anaheim, California. In 1982, it was put to use at Epcot in Disney World in Florida.
The Volo Auto Museum’s acquisition of the bus in 2014 came after purchases of a number of other vintage Disney novelties and statuary, preserving the historical items.
Rides will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis throughout the day to paid visitors during museum hours.
The Volo Auto Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. It features about 400 classic, muscle, Hollywood cars and more. Regular admission is $15 for adults, $9 for children ages 5 to 12 and free for children 4 and younger. For information, call 815-385-3644, visit the museum's Facebook page or visit volocars.com.
