Theresa Jones was walking her dog with a friend about 11 a.m. Tuesday in Sun City Huntley when she heard and felt an explosion at a home she was walking past.

Within 10 minutes, she said, a home in the
13400 block of Michigan Avenue was engulfed in black smoke and flames.

“I knew it was big trouble,” Jones said.

Huntley police and fire responded to the scene, and it took less than an hour to extinguish the blaze, Huntley Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Tim Flannigan said.

After the initial shock, Jones said, she helped a woman in a neighboring home out of her house, and people started to call 911.

Two firefighters were injured at the scene, but Flannigan said they were treated and released Tuesday.

Jones said she had been advised that no one was in the unit at the time of the explosion.

A cause for the fire still is under investigation. Officials did not comment on the estimated damage.

This is the second fire to have damaged a Sun City home this week.

On Sunday morning, firefighters were called to the 12000 block of Illinois Street for an attic fire that rendered a home uninhabitable.

Another fire in May destroyed two homes and at least one vehicle in the
14100 block of Saffron Trail.
