YORKVILLE – Kendall County prosecutors are trying to get their hands on eye care records belonging to an Aurora man who has been charged with reckless homicide after allegedly striking and killing a woman with his vehicle and then leaving the scene of the crash.
Prosecutors said Nehemiah Williams, 38, of the 100 block of Gregory Street, Aurora, was driving June 24 on Plainfield Road near Plainsman Court in Oswego Township when he struck Amanda Stanton, 26, of Lockport, who had been walking home from a wedding along the side of the road.
Stanton was the head softball coach at Oswego High School and was a math intervention specialist at Jefferson Junior High School in Naperville.
Williams is charged with failing to report a crash that resulted in personal injury or death, reckless homicide and driving with a suspended license, all felonies.
Prosecutors said that Williams, who has a “corrective eye lens restriction” on his license, admitted that he wasn’t wearing glasses or contacts at the time of the crash.
“The nature, duration and extent of the defendant’s need for corrective lenses would be relevant to the charge of reckless homicide,” prosecutors wrote in a motion for a qualified protective order filed Aug. 21.
The motion means that prosecutors are trying to obtain medical records pertaining to Williams’ vision from an Aurora eye care provider he has been seeing. Those records, unless released by a judge, are covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
About a month ago, a Kendall County Sheriff’s Office investigation showed Stanton was not walking in the roadway when she was killed. Sheriff Dwight Baird said her body was found under a tree along Plainfield Road and that the sheriff’s office investigation showed her body had not been moved.
The autopsy showed that Stanton also had a gray paint chip on her body. Prosecutors have alleged that Williams was behind the wheel of a silver 2006 Chrysler Pacifica when the incident occurred.
