Warriors, Comets tie at Oregon

The Sterling and Newman boys cross country teams tied for top honors at the
Oregon 7-Person Invitational
on Wednesday at Oregon Park West.

Each squad amassed 13 points, four fewer than the Illinois Math & Science Academy. Rounding out the field were Rockridge (34), Rochelle (36) and Genoa-Kingston (38).

Scoring was done by order of finish within seven divisions – No. 1 runners raced against each other, No. 2 runners raced against each other, and on down the line.

The top Sterling runners were Isaiah Moorman (6th, 18 minutes, 14 seconds), Mikio Martinez (7th, 18:38) and Dillon Nitz (8th, 19:25).

Leading the way for the Comets were Spencer Mauch (2nd, 17:07) and Shay Hafner (3rd, 17:12).

The overall winner was IMSA’s Daniel Chen in 16:54.

On the girls side, Sterling won with 11 points, and was followed by IMSA (22), Oregon (23), Rochelle (24) and Rockridge (43).

Andrea Cervantes led Sterling with a time of 22:07, good for fourth place.

Oregon’s Leah Watters was 9th in 23:13.

Newman’s Karlie Hey won the race in 20:36.

Girls swimming

Byron 124, LaSalle-Peru 56: Dixon students Katie Drezen and Laci Long helped the Byron co-op to a win against LaSalle-Peru/Ottawa in Byron.

Drezen led the way in the 50 freestyle (25.12) and 100 backstroke (1:04.95). Long won the 1-meter diving with 161.55 points.

Volleyball

East Dubuque def. Polo 25-13, 25-21: Alex Dusing
had five kills and three assists for the Marcos in a road loss to the Warriors.

Also for Polo, Cassie Bushman had three aces and three digs, and Becca Wagner added two aces and two kills.

Falcons win two: Michal Schuler had 17 kills, 11 aces and six digs to lead Faith Christian to a 25-13, 25-17, 25-16 win against Fulton Unity on Tuesday in Fulton.

The Falcons (7-0) also picked up a 25-10, 25-21, 25-16 win against Pathway. Meghan Van Buren dished 27 assists.
