Third man charged in attempted armed robbery

SYCAMORE – The DeKalb teen who police said arranged an armed robbery in August apparently will be in jail until at least Wednesday.

Darien D. Ross, 19, of the 100 block of Augusta Avenue, has been charged with attempted armed robbery and could face four to 15 years in prison with a conviction.

He’s the third man arrested in connection with an Aug. 4 armed robbery in the 700 block of Regent Drive in DeKalb, where police said a gun was pointed at the victim about 11 p.m., and that the robbery was thwarted when a neighbor saw what was happening and called the police.

Police said in court records that Ross, Gregory J. Thorn, 23, of the 700 block of Regent Drive, and Emmanuel M. Thomas, 18, of the 400 block of Oak Street, were trying to steal the victim’s belt, money and drugs.

A warrant was issued for Ross’ arrest with a $75,000 bond attached, and despite Public Defender Tom McCulloch’s request during a bond hearing Wednesday that Ross be allowed to post $3,000 and walk free, Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert kept bond at $75,000. She said McCulloch can file a motion for bond reduction, but that she won’t hear it until she knows more about Ross’ juvenile criminal history. He’s due back in court at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Thorn is in the DeKalb County Jail, as well, on $75,000 bond, and Thomas is being held on $250,000 bond. Thomas is due back in court at 9 a.m. Sept. 27, and Thorn is scheduled for
9 a.m. Oct. 5.
