MUNISING, Mich. — Thomas “Tommy” Tyner, 71, of Munising, Mich., formerly of Princeton, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2018, at his home under the loving care of his family and North Woods Home Hospice, following a courageous battle with ALS.
He was born April 19, 1947, in Munising, Mich., to Leo and Irma (Somerville) Tyner.
He graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1965. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps in September of 1966 and honorably served in Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged as a lance corporal in April of 1969.
He worked for over 30 years for LTV Steel in Hennepin. He started as a machinist and was later asked to work in their business department work on computers and repairs. After a short time in the offices, he realized how much more he preferred working with his hands and returned to his position as a machinist.
Surviving are his wife, Arlene DesArmo-Tyner of Munising; his children, Mike Tyner, Jimmy Tyner and Patricia R. Ihrig (Tyner); his grandchildren, Michael, Steven, Dylan, Kihrsten, Ian, Kaitlynn, Weseley, Hunter, Britney and Alexis; his great-granddaughters, Braelynn Renee Tyner and Madelynn Ann Tyner; a daughter-in-law, Sue Rivord; his siblings, Butch Tyner, Teddy (Margret) Tyner, Iris Bugg, Gary (Marie) McQuisten and Shelly Davis; a brother-in-law, John Nash; a sister-in-law, Denise Thompson; a lifelong friend, Mary Jo Gamelin-Washam; his caregivers, Sam and Michele; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo Tyner and Irma and Floyd McQuisten; a sister, Katy Nash; two brothers-in-law, Paul DesArmo and Donnie Thompson; and his first wife, Patricia A. Tyner (Revord).
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at the Maple Grove Cemetery, where the American Legion and Vietnam Veteran Honor Guard will conduct military honors and Father Chris Gardiner will conduct committal prayers.
