Fox River flooding expected to continue as more rain approaches McHenry County

Heavy rains hit McHenry County over weekend

More rain and cool temperatures are coming, as the Fox River in McHenry County continues to rise.

A little more than a week into October, McHenry County already has been hit with more rain than usual.

“At O’Hare [International Airport], 3.15 inches is the normal for October, and the area got most of that in a weekend,” said Jamie Enderlen, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Romeoville.

Between Saturday and Sunday, portions of the county received more than 3 inches of rain. Enderlen said totals varied by municipality.

The weather service calculated Monday that Woodstock received 3.02 inches, Bull Valley was hit with
3.01 inches, Algonquin got 0.77 inches and Crystal Lake 1.06 inches.

“Most of the county got 1.5 inches or higher, with some portions getting 3 inches or more,” Enderlen said.

There were no reports of serious storm damage or flooding, Enderlen said, but people living near the Fox River should be prepared for flooding later this week as more storms roll through. The county remains under a flood warning.

As of Monday evening, the Fox River just south of the Algonquin dam was at 10.13 feet, and expected to climb to 10.7 feet by the middle of the week. Flood stage is 9.5 feet.

The McHenry dam also experienced flooding, with river levels about a foot over flood stage Monday evening.
