Brandon Road bridge remains closed through Friday

The Brandon Road bridge, which closed to vehicular traffic Friday in Joliet Township, will remain closed until at least Friday for repairs.

The closure is necessary to replace a mechanical component on the bridge, according to a news release from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The drawbridge over the Des Plaines River has been closed repeatedly the past two years for repairs of the center lock mechanism that connects the two ends of the bridge.

After a recent breakdown, IDOT said it would replace the entire center lock mechanism sometime next year.

The Brandon Road bridge, built in the 1930s, is one of six drawbridges that cross the Des Plaines River in the Joliet area. The other bridges are in downtown Joliet.

A detour will direct traffic across the river at McDonough Street via Route 6, Route 52/Illinois 53 and Laraway Road, according to the release.
