CHICAGO — Chicago artist Joe Rodenski, 74, died in Greeley, Colo., Thursday, Oct. 25, after an extended illness.
A CTA bus driver for 26 years, Rodenski was five-time runner up in the bus rodeo, requiring drivers to negotiate an obstacle course. He earned the nickname Rodeo Joe, with his cowboy dress style.
As Joe Rode, his satirical sculptures were shown at the University of Chicago and the Art Institute of Chicago.
He enjoyed playing his huge collection of country and jazz records for family and friends in the honky-tonk bar he built in his home.
Rodenski is survived by his wife, Nancy, whom he married in 1970; his daughter, Nova Martinez; sons, J. Lennon Rodenski, Jeff McCowan, Danny McCowan and Gary Frank; seven grandchildren, including K.J. and Karma Martinez; and one great-grandchild.
“I never knew of anyone who did not like him,” his wife said. “He knew no strangers.”
"He was the love of my life."
