Crystal Lake police charge Illinois State Police trooper with DUI

A traffic stop Friday led to the arrest of an off-duty Illinois State Police trooper accused of driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.

Officers pulled over 49-year-old Matthew Konie after they said he was speeding on Main Street near Crystal Lake Avenue, Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Derek Hyrkas said Monday.

A passenger in the car was not charged.

Konie, of Lake in the Hills, has been a master sergeant with the Illinois State Police since at least 2017, state comptroller records show. Illinois State Police could not be reached for comment on the charge or potential disciplinary action.

Konie refused to participate in roadside sobriety tests or submit to a breath test to determine his blood-alcohol level, Hyrkas said. Officers received a search warrant to obtain a blood sample from Konie. Results from that test are not complete.

The trooper’s license could be suspended, depending on the blood test’s results. Konie was released from the Crystal Lake Police Department after posting bond, Hyrkas said.

Documents related to Konie’s arrest were not yet filed at the McHenry County Courthouse on Monday afternoon, and details surrounding his arrest were not available.

Konie earned $167,000 as a master sergeant in 2018, making him the 11th highest-paid employee in the department that year, comptroller records show.
