Most Valuable Athlete: Trevor Chumbley

Name: Trevor Chumbley

School: Marmion, senior

Sport: Wrestling

Why he was selected: Chumbley won his second straight Class 3A 145-pound championship, defeating Montini's Fidel Mayora 2-1 in double overtime. Chumbley faced Mayora nine times in the last two years and only lost once.

Chumbley, who will wrestle collegiately at Northwestern, caught up with Chronicle sports reporter Jacob Bartelson to recap the state finals and look ahead to what's next. Below is an edited transcript.

Bartelson: Now that you’ve had more time to reflect, how do you feel about your weekend performance?

Chumbley: I feel like I wrestled a great state tournament and I came out on top so I can’t really argue with that. There are some little things I wish I could have done better, but in the end, I’m happy that I was able to accomplish my goal of winning another state championship.

Bartelson: Your team had a fantastic weekend.  How do you put the team success into perspective?

Chumbley: I’m super proud of all my teammates, and it was awesome to see everyone cheering for one another every match! I think the success we had was a testament to all of our hard work, and a reflection of the incredible job our coaching staff has done.

Bartelson: Brad Gross obviously wrestled amid unimaginable circumstances, but what did you observe of him regarding his perseverance?

Chumbley: Brad Gross is the toughest kid I know by far. He’s a tremendous wrestler, and an even better family man, teammate and friend. He gave it his all this weekend, and I couldn’t be more proud of him and on top of all his success. He was extremely supportive of everyone who wrestled this weekend.

Bartelson: How excited are you for your next chapter at Northwestern?

Chumbley: I’m very excited for the next chapter, but I will definitely miss all of my current teammates and coaches. I know we’ll all stay close though so I’m not worried! I am, however, ready to continue on my journey at Northwestern and I’m excited to work with all my future teammates and coaches!
